Short answer: the Rolex Datejust comes in 31, 36 and 41 mm sizes. For most buyers, the Datejust 36 is the classic choice and the Datejust 41 suits larger wrists. Current models (126xxx references, and 278xxx for the 31 mm) use Rolex’s newest movements with a 70-hour power reserve (55 hours for the 31 mm). Earlier six-digit 116xxx models offer the same look for less, and vintage five-digit models are the most affordable way into Rolex.
Launched in 1945, the Datejust was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to show the date in a window on the dial. The magnifying Cyclops lens over the date followed in 1953. Eighty years later it remains Rolex’s most versatile watch, available in countless combinations of size, metal, bezel, dial and bracelet. This guide explains the choices so you can find the right one.
1. Choose your size: 31, 36 or 41 mm
| Size | Best for | Current movement |
|---|---|---|
| Datejust 31 | Smaller wrists, elegant and jewellery-like | Calibre 2236, about 55 hours |
| Datejust 36 | The original size; suits most wrists | Calibre 3235, about 70 hours |
| Datejust 41 | Larger wrists, more modern presence | Calibre 3235, about 70 hours |
All modern Datejusts are water resistant to 100 m. If you are between sizes, the 36 mm is the timeless choice and is often the most sought-after.
2. Understand the generations
- Current (126xxx and 278xxx): the Datejust 41 arrived in 2017 and the updated Datejust 36 in 2019, both with calibre 3235 and a 70-hour power reserve. The current Datejust 31 uses calibre 2236 with about 55 hours.
- Previous (116xxx, mid-2000s to 2019): calibre 3135 with about 48 hours of power reserve. A proven, highly reliable movement and often better value than current models.
- Vintage (five-digit, such as 16013 or 68273): classic proportions, acrylic or early sapphire crystals depending on the era, and the lowest prices. Condition and service history matter most here.
3. Choose the metal
Rolex encodes the metal in the last digit of the reference. 0 is all Oystersteel; 3 is Yellow Rolesor (steel and yellow gold); 4 is White Rolesor (steel with a white gold bezel). Steel is the most understated and practical; two-tone Rolesor is the classic “Rolex look”; White Rolesor looks like steel but adds the sparkle of a white gold fluted bezel. 4. Choose the bezel
- Smooth or domed: clean and understated, the most casual look.
- Fluted: the Datejust signature, made of gold, which catches the light beautifully.
- Diamond-set: the most formal and jewellery-like option.
5. Choose the bracelet
The Oyster bracelet has three broad links and looks sporty. The five-link Jubilee was created for the Datejust and is dressier and very comfortable. The President bracelet is reserved for solid gold and platinum models.
6. Choose the dial
Dials range from simple silver, black or blue with baton markers, to Roman numerals, mother-of-pearl and diamond-set versions. Mother-of-pearl dials are natural, so every one is unique. Pick the dial you will enjoy every day; classic colours are the easiest to wear and to resell.

What to check before buying a Datejust
- The reference and serial match the papers, if papers are included.
- The movement matches the reference: calibre 3235 in a 126xxx, 3135 in a 116xxx, for example.
- The Cyclops lens magnifies the date clearly (about 2.5 times) and is centred over it.
- The bracelet is not overly stretched, especially on older Jubilee bracelets.
- Service history, particularly for vintage models.

Frequently asked questions
Which Rolex Datejust size should I buy?
The Datejust 36 is the classic size and suits most wrists. Choose the Datejust 41 for a larger wrist or a more modern look, and the Datejust 31 for a smaller, more elegant fit.
What is the difference between the Datejust 116200 and 126200?
Both are 36 mm steel Datejusts. The 116200 uses the calibre 3135 with about 48 hours of power reserve; the 126200, introduced in 2019, uses the newer calibre 3235 with about 70 hours.
Is the Rolex Datejust a good investment?
The Datejust is valued for its durability and timeless design, and popular references hold their value well. Prices depend on the reference, condition and market, so buy one you will enjoy wearing.
What does the fluted bezel on a Datejust mean?
The fluted bezel is a decorative ridged bezel made of gold. It is a Datejust signature and is fitted to Rolesor and gold models.
How do I know a Rolex Datejust is genuine?
Check that the reference and serial numbers match the papers, that the movement matches the reference, that the Cyclops lens magnifies the date clearly, and buy from a seller who authenticates every watch and offers a written return policy.
